Final Goodbyes
As we all prepare for a well-deserved summer break (woot woot!), I would just like to make some closing comments about our adventure this term. As I mentioned back at the beginning of the course, this history class was going to be unlike more "traditional" courses. I hope you understand that the focus on writing was not due to my confusion over what type of course I was instructing, but rather as a result of my earnest desire to help all of you grow in the skill. Progress is based on your own individual growth, and I personally think that each of you has become a stronger writer in whatever area you needed to grow in. AP Euro? It willl be a piece of cake as long as you remember to avoid procastination and continue to practice your essay writing.
Beyond that, I also hope that each of have become more acquainted with the skills required to be a diligent member of this 21st century. Online research is not going away, and it is vital to understand just how much information is available on the web ( on the flip side, also to be cautious towards the invalid information floating online). The blog challenges accomplished by each of you show the ability to communicate information via a non-traditional medium, and I must admit that some of you blew me away with your digital creativty.
The weebly sites maintained by all of you also offer evidence as to how unique different cultures are all around the world. At the same time, it also shows how certain aspects of mankind are universal and commonly found, no matter the language spoken, religion worshipped, or political ideology practiced. I hope that at least one of the units interested you, and it has sparked some desire to learn more. If this is the case, I encourage you to go out and travel the world for yourself. Yes, money can be an issue, but you can still start somewhere! At least try to visit museums, cities outside of San Diego county, or even try foods you've never tasted before.
In order to be a more active member of this ever-globalizing society, each of us needs to grow and develop understandings of just why the world works the way it does. Personally, this is what has always fascinated me about social studies. History is full of dates, famous people, and other remarkable events. However, every person living in this world is somehow making an impact, either it positive or negative. As a historian, it is important to note these ongoing trends and hopefully use the evidence to create solutions to problems when they rise.
In closing, I know that each of you are going to grow up and become impactful citizens. Even if you still view History as a boring subject, I hope that you can at least acknowledge and be conscious of the social connections being made every day across the globe. No matter what field you choose to specialize in as a career, it is highliy likely you are going to be a part of the globalized world. As long as you strive to accept others for their differences and live a life of compassion, you too will be making a positive impact on the world around you.
Best of luck!

DBQ Outline - EXTRA CREDIT, DUE TUESDAY (5/28)
I know class ended in a rush, but here is a further explanation of what is expected. Going through the DBQ on Communism in China, you can receive 10 points extra credit if you create an outline and bring it to class on Tuesday. During that class, we will be writing a DBQ essay response to the prompt. In other words, the outline will be greatly beneficial to you!

Unit VI: China and Japan
After our first in-class DBQ (yay!), we enter our final unit of regional studies. Just as with the Middle East and India, the "Far East" is a political region that was once the true world power. It is our job to identify what features of theese early empires made them so great, and then which faults eventually led to their downfall. Analysis of gender relations will also play a huge part in our lessons. Geo Time! will again be equally important, especially when we begin to analyze modern trade policies in the region.
As our studies reach closer to modern times, there will also be an in-depth analysis of communism. What is it, anyways? China and Japan are such unique nations, even though they share many similarities in their history. Through completion of reading outlines, class discussions, and more DBQ essays, this unit will hopefully explain the topsy turvy nature of social studies in the "Far East."

Unit V: India
This unit will be somewhat shorter than usual (two weeks), but it will be full of many of the same types of discussions and assignments you have grown accustomed to. In a slight twist, we begin the unit with a brief examination of India's modern situation. Building off of this introduction to the nation's basic standing, the overarching question for this unit is as follows: How and why has India reached the point it is at today?
We will discuss the region's diverse cultures and religions. Geo Time! will also sneak in, at sometime. Lastly, and most importantly, we will begin the venture towards accomplishing a document-based question. This new type of essay format will further develop your organization skills, primary source interpretations, and overall writing technique.

World Action News Report: DUE THURSDAY (4/25)
Your assignment is to produce a live presentation (powerpoint, Prezi, etc.) and conduct a brief “report” on a specific country from this unit. This presentation will be produced by you and your group members, so it requires clear communication and strong teamwork. In addition to this, be sure that each role is assigned to one or two group members. Available positions are as follows:
-Creative Designer: responsible for assembling visual presentation; needs to include a title page, political and physical map of the country, major man-made feature with historical importance, and then work with other group members to find additional images (5). Also, needs to have a digital and hardy copy of the presentation (flash drive).
-Historian: responsible for researching the recent history of this country (19th - 20th century). A 6-part timeline needs to be created. Important information to include would be changes in leadership, domestic/foreign combat, and other changes in society.
-Domestic Affairs Correspondent: responsible for reporting on two domestic issues going on in the country (changes in the role of women, youth movements, religion, etc.).
-Foreign Affairs Correspondent: responsible for reporting on two aspects of the country’s foreign relations (international organizations, trade, ongoing disputes, etc.)
During the actual presentation, it is not necessary to read each member’s report verbatim. More importantly, the main points should be identified on each corresponding powerpoint slide. As part of the presentation, each group member should offer further clarification for the slides representing his/her research.

Unit IV: The Arab Empires
We return to historical studies, and this unit will present us with many new critical issues to comprehend. While every unit truly offers some new revelation about human nature, I feel that this unit offers the special opportunity to reflect on the Western/Eastern divide in ideologies that is so prevalent today. Much information about Islam has been shaped by both people in the "West" and the "East." It is my goal to help you all redefine your outlook on the issues surrounding Islam, as well for each of you to further analyze the root causes for conflicts in today's global landscape.
We will learn about the early Abrahamic religions, and then study how Islam was able to expand over so many diverse regions. In regards to the term "region", we will also identify the various geographic, ethnic, and political regions that are all components of the "Islamic world." Geo Time! may also sneak itself into a lesson or two. As always, be prepared for a quiz in three weeks, and also be sure to stay on task with completion of all homework. Given that this is a new semester, you all have a chance to start with a A+!!
